Talk by M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen on August 25, 1976 Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.) said, “God has told us, first intend God and say these words (A’uthu billahi minash-shaitanir rajim) to burn up the satanic thoughts, intentions, bad qualities and all such influences that are connected to Adam. When one says, with a melting heart, Minal-shaitanir rajeem (minal is a Tamil word meaning lightning) the satan will be removed from him like lightning. This is a phrase that comes from the mystery of His dhat (God’s essence: His treasury of grace). These mysterious words (A’uthu billahi minash-shaitanir rajim) were given to the prophets. Now for those who already have certitude of iman (absolute, unshakable, resolute faith, certitude and determination that God alone exists; the complete acceptance by the heart that God is One) and for those who have the understanding of wisdom, these words will give benefit or reward. They will make one’s soul become clear and pure. Therefore, before you pray, these words should be used. Then in your heart, say “Subhanallahi, walhumdulillahi” (the third Kalimah) with an understanding of the meaning. “The One to whom all glory is due: Subhanallah. For the beginning and for the end, You are the One to whom all praise is due; walhumdulillahi. This was given to the prophets as a mystery in the station of Haqiqat (the third step of spiritual ascendance). At this level man must have the faith, certitude, and determination to merge with God. So this particular verse belongs to the section of gnanam (divine luminous wisdom). It transcends Tariqat (the second of the five steps of spiritual ascendance); it transcends all four religions. It is a mysterious verse that, when recited, cuts and burns up jealousies, envy and all such things that are in one’s heart. Therefore, before one even intends God, he should recite the Kalimah in his heart three times and be free of these qualities (impurities). Before reciting the Dhikr (The remembrance of God. Remembering with each breath that there is nothing other than You, only You are God—La ilaha, ill Allahu), you must recite this Kalimah (the Third Kalimah) three times. Doing so with firm conviction in one’s heart destroys all satanic influences such as envy and jealousy. That is why this Kalimah was revealed. It cuts through, transcends, and goes beyond religions, races, scriptures and philosophies. All of thse things are cut down by reciting the Kalimah. “M.R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen- a Sufi mystic, can best be remembered for his efforts to bring unity through understanding to the faithful of all religions.” Discourse From: August 25, 1976 Bawa Muhaiyaddeen Fellowship Family Newsletter January – February 2001
