god articles - "Prayer Without the Light of Wisdom"

By: Bawa Muhaiyaddeen

Praying without the light of wisdom, without perfect purity, and without certitude is not true prayer. Thus, if we assault people or frighten them into worshiping Allah ta'ala Nayan, or say this or that to trick them into going to prayers, their hearts would not be melting, and they would be praying without faith and certitude, without carefully analyzing their wisdom and without surrendering to God. In that case, no matter what form of prayer or worship they do, it will not be acceptable to God. One who prayers out of fear of being beaten, or for the sake of public opinion, will not pray with a melting heart. And Allah will not accept such worship.

This is why one who is man must pray with melting heart, with faith and certitude. Only if he makes his wisdom steadfast in certitude to the one irrefutable God and prays with melting heart will it be true prayer. This is what pleases Allah. And Allah, knowing that heart, will bestow the appropriate benefits and rewards.

Further, in various books by imams, harsh words such as hack, chop, and cut have been used. (If we reflect on this seriously, we will realize that it is our evil thoughts they are telling us to sever.) Their words were in keeping with the laws of shari'at. However, they differed among themselves regarding the interpretation of these laws, even in the matter of which foods are permissible (halal) for man, and which are forbidden (haram). Each of the four imams even prescribed a different manner in which the arms should be folded in prayer.

But of them, Imam ash-Shafi'i was one with subtle wisdom. That subtle wisdom led him to declare that wherever the word 'cut' appears, it really means to wash away and eliminate impurity, by reciting the kalimah three times.

Thus, by understanding the laws and precepts of the aforementioned imams and teaching the true inner meanings, Imam ash-Shafi'i cleared away many misunderstandings and helped the people to get rid of their faults and to make their lives acceptable to Allah. In this way, he guided their faith into pure Islam, and safeguarded it.

Like this, one who is man must know what is permissible and acceptable to God (halal), and what is not (haram). He must know truth and goodness, and use his wisdom to live with the certitude of iman. With wisdom he must examine and analyze everything: truth, Allah's inner and outer secrets, insan's inner and outer secrets, the truths of the kalimah, the inner and outer secrets of this world (dunya), the secrets of creation, the inner subtleties of wisdom, and the inner and outer secrets of the seventy thousand attributes of Allah. Then, cutting away all that is evil with the kalimah or iman, he must recognize and accept all the good things of immaculate purity and place them in front of the Rasul. If he does this, he will be one who has the purity of dinul-Islam.

O my brethren! Try to learn the truth through your wisdom! That will be the purity of true Islam. Whoever gains this knowledge through a thorough investigation with wisdom will be a true believer, a mu'min. Radiant wisdom is resplendent Muhammad.
