god articles : duty - "How Will The Melting State be Shown?"

By: Bawa Muhaiyaddeen

STUDENT: Will that melting state be shown outside, like weeping, tears flowing down, or anything like that?

BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: It is possible. When the heart melts, if it is really melting, you might cry. But if the heart doesn't become soft, there will be no tears.

There are many different things that melt the heart. Sometimes when you feel very sad you might weep. Or if somebody beats you, your eyes might fill with tears. If you have a strong desire which is not fulfilled, tears might come then also. Such tears are called crocodile tears. They are created by the mind and by desire. But the tears that come from a strong desire for God are different. They come from a melting heart. When that kind of heart connection is made, everything melts. The tears that come then are entirely different.

However, when the heart is made to melt by those other desires, what happens is similar to what happens when milk is made into butter; the blades keep churning and churning until some curds float upward and form the butter. In the same way, when desires enter the mind, they churn it up and keep churning until they form butter for the mind. But when the desire that enters you is for Allah, then it is faith and wisdom that keep churning and rotating inside the grace of God, until His light is formed.

The first kind of churning takes the butter that is extracted from the mind and body and gives it to the mind. In the second kind of churning, wisdom extracts God's light from His grace, and the butter that comes from that churning is given to grace. That light, that rahmat, is wisdom's food. It is like that.

What else did you talk about yesterday?

STUDENT: I said that we have never seen God. Bawa talks of God's qualities, but since we have never seen God, we do not know what those qualities are. The only way for us to learn is to look at Bawa as God's representative, to watch what he does, and to look at his qualities and say, "This must be what God's qualities are like."

BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: If you observe one of God's qualities, you must take that quality into yourself. Once you absorb it, you must bring it into your actions. After it comes into you actions, you must reveal that action to others. If you can do that, it will be good. Through that action you can see God.

STUDENT: We can see your love through your actions.

BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: Not though my actions, through yours. You must take the quality of love into yourself and put it into practice. That way you will demonstrate it to the other children. In other words, you are offering it to the hearts of the others. If you do it that way, then you are putting love into action, and within that action you will see God.

STUDENT: So if we wish to see that love, first we have to see it demonstrated in Bawangal's actions, and then we have to go in the reverse direction to find out what that love is. Is that correct or not?

BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: If you see a good quality, take on that quality yourself and use it. If you see a good action, take on that action yourself and use it. You yourself must take on that quality or perform that action and then spread it among others. If you do this, you will be able to understand the resonance of Allah, and that resonance will give you the explanations you need. Then both you and the others will benefit.

But if you do not take that quality into yourself, if you do not put it into practice, then it is like writing on water with your finger. You write, but when you turn around and look again, the writing is gone. You only saw a finger, not the writing itself. Similarly, you might have observed the sheikh, but you did not see the real action, because you did not put it into practice yourself.
