STUDENT: Bawa has said that you can't have any doubt in God. I find myself plagued by doubts in myself, and I do not know how to deal with them. I have doubts about my wisdom and my capacity to make decisions. BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: The primary problem is lack of faith in God. A man who has no faith in God cannot have faith in himself. If someone has developed faith in God, he will say, "Your will be done, O God. Whatever I do is Your action, not mine." God is the One who is responsible for everything. When you hand over all responsibility to Him, He accepts the results, because He is the Creator, and He protects and nourishes what He has created. It is He who gave you your very life. He gave you a brain and the ability to think. He gave you eyes, ears, a mouth, hands and legs. And He never fails to give you your food and clothing. Your father and mother may forget you, but God will perform His duty toward you without ever forgetting. He is the only One who will always remember. If you do not have faith in God, who has done so much for you, then you cannot develop any faith whatsoever in yourself. If you do not have faith in God, then every one of your thoughts may bring you danger and evil. Every thought that arises within you could kill you. This is the state that will result. But when you have faith in God, then all the responsibility becomes His. When something happens, you will have patience. If something more difficult happens, you will have inner patience. In the face of greater trouble you will feel contentment and gratitude. And for even greater trouble you will surrender totally to God, saying, "Tawakkul 'alallah—There is nothing I can do; everything is Your responsibility." Finally you will give all praise to God, saying, "Al-hamdu lillah!" This is true faith. At the point that you hand over all responsibility to God, that faith in Him will operate. If you have the faith that only God can do what needs to be done, then you will have peace of mind. But as long as that faith is missing, your life will be like a bit of straw tossed about in a gale.
