QUESTION: For a long time I have felt a deep loneliness within me. It has always been very scary to me, so I have tried to fill it through relationships with friends or family, but none of them seem to take away that loneliness. They only seem to bring pain or disappointments. How can I stop feeling that loneliness, or stop being afraid of it? BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: Let’s say you go to a supermarket in order to buy a lid for a certain pot. The salesman may have stored the lids in one place and the handles in another. He might not even have the items right there, he may only have a list of the catalog numbers. So if you tell him, “I have a certain kind of pot. Can you give me a lid that matches?” it may take him some time to find the right lid. While he looks, you need to be patient. Don’t be impatient and walk away, saying, “What’s the matter with him? He is taking too long. How much longer can I wait? I don’t want it after all.” If you leave, you will never obtain the correct lid. You have to be a little patient. The salesman might bring five or six lids. He might even need to check the list and try ten or fifteen different lids before he finds one that fits the pot. As soon as one matches, he will say, “Ah, this one is yours. Now you can take it.” Until that lid is found, the only thing you must do is wait patiently. There is One who created you. The One who created the pot also created a lid for it. The One who created the male also created the female. They are all in this supermarket of the world. You only need to be a little patient. You must hand over all responsibility to God and wait patiently, just as you have to wait when you ask the salesman to fetch a lid for your pot. When the time comes, you will get the right lid. But if you become impatient and ask the security guard to fetch a lid for you, or if you ask the supermarket manager’s wife, or someone else’s wife or child, you will be wasting your time. How can they bring you the proper lid? They cannot. You will only feel the pain of having wasted your time. Because you were suffering so much, you went to others and explained your state to them. But you did not get what you wanted. With each person you turned to, you wasted more time and suffered more pain. If you hand over all responsibility to the One who is responsible and then wait patiently, it will work out. Do you understand? Good. Be like that. Trust in God.
