A Child’s Birthday Blessing from M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen

(May God forever be pleased with him)

Bawa: Compared to last year, you have less faith in God and less wisdom. You now come here to play, not to learn wisdom. Last year you helped the Fellowship, you collected money for the book, the Voice of Allah. But this year you have been coming here to play, not to listen to wisdom. You don’t come and sit and listen to the discourses, you don’t try to understand them.

Next year you must have more wisdom, not less. You come here to play, but this is not a place to do that. That won’t help you with your life, it won’t help your life.

So my blessings can’t be given if you do not know how to profit from them. My blessings won’t matter if you act like some other children here. If you give a flower to a monkey, what will it do? If you come and don’t learn the good wisdom here, it won’t do you any good. You must be aware of what Bawanga says, what he talks about, listen to the discourses and to the other people who speak good wisdom to you.

Come forward.

May you grow up to be good. May you have good wisdom and be happy. May you have no pain or disease. May you study well and become an important, wealthy man. May you have much wisdom, prosper in the world and have faith in God.

Child: But my mom said I didn’t have to listen, that she would listen and tell me.

Bawa: That’s crazy!

Mother: I said that because he said he couldn’t understand anything.

Bawa: If he listens, even if he doesn’t understand it all, he should still listen and it will go in. Then, if you don’t understand something, you can ask your mother later. Everyone must learn, must try to listen and take a little.
