God brings clarity to us in many different ways. One person may receive lessons through his children, another through his wife, another through his job. In a variety of ways God offers us lessons. So, each time we come face to face with a problem or a difficulty, we need to accept that it has been given to lift us up to a higher step. Each time something comes that causes us pain or suffering or worry, we need to realize that God has designed it to elevate us one more level. Throughout life, He keeps giving us lessons so that, one by one, we can climb the ninety-nine steps. (1) Unfortunately, we tend to think of these situations as misfortunes, and we suffer and complain. A lesson may come to us in any form—a problem at work, an issue concerning titles or fame, a question over caste or race, a political cause we espouse, or even through hunger, or illness, or disease. But each of these is really an opportunity for us to climb up one more step in our love for God. It's a chance to strengthen our faith in Him and acquire His qualities. Therefore, we shouldn't criticize God, saying, "He gave me too many troubles!" We need to realize that with each difficulty He's trying to lift us up from the shaky, unsteady step we're on now and place us on a higher step, a step that will strengthen our faith and certitude, where we can establish a firm footing. Never think that God is testing you. That's not the way He works. Always interpret whatever comes as a chance for God to lift you up. Look at it that way and think, "This is happening to show me something, to explain something to me." So climb up. Climb to the next step with faith, with certitude, and with determination. If you can succeed in doing this for all ninety-nine steps, then all the problems you've been facing will be gone. You will have left them all behind. You will see only God. These trouble are doing you no good; they don’t even want to be with you, so leave them behind and climb higher. If you go back down to their level, that will only invite more trouble. So climb up, and keep climbing. God says, "Climb, trusting in Me. Come up and stay in My place, the place of goodness. Come toward Me and climb with faith and strong certitude." That's what you need. Then you will understand Him. Stop your complaining and your whining. Stop saying, "Oh, God is testing me. He's giving me this trial. If there is a God, why is He giving me these troubles?" That's not how you should behave. God has told us, "I made both good and evil for you to look at and to assess which things are good and which are evil. Goodness is what belongs to you, and evil is your enemy. So when evil chases after you, leave it behind and climb up." When the next problem appears, climb higher. You're not really trying to climb. You do have to face these difficulties in order to grow. If you keep finding fault with God and complaining about your life, you will be giving up God instead of moving toward Him. You need to understand this. This is an act of faith. You must continue to have the certitude and the determination to go toward Him. The man who succeeds in climbing up all the steps will be a perfected human being. September 27, 1981 Footnote: 1) This is a reference to the ninety-nine names of God in Islam, names such as the Merciful One, the Compassionate One. To climb a step is to acquire and take on the qualities attributed to that particular name. For further explanations, see Asma'ul-Husna: The 99 Beautiful Names of Allah, by M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen.
