Q: Do you have to become old and wise to experience tranquility, or can this tranquility also be experienced by a child, the tranquility that Bawa demonstrates? Bawa Muhaiyaddeen: God’s Grace belongs in common to everybody, from the baby in the cradle to the very, very old. The Grace of God is here. All potentialities exist within an apple seed. The tree is there, the leaves are there, the branches are there, the unripe fruits are there, the ripe fruits are there, the taste is there, the color is there. Everything is there. They are all in that seed. All of those things, all the trees, are in the seed, but the seeds are hidden within the fruit. When the seeds are taken from within the fruit, they can be planted. When the seeds from within the fruit are planted, again all the potentialities are there and everything comes again. It is like that, that the seed is hidden within us. It is there, but we have not planted it. If we take it and plant it in the appropriate seasons, the taste will come. It has existed all the time, since the beginningless beginning. If we pull up all the weeds and grass that will grow around it, if we can clear the ground around it, if we can clear away what is hiding it, it will start growing. Then there will be peace. Q: How can we always keep our heart center open and stay in the presence of God? Bawa Muhaiyaddeen: Would you like that? Alright. One can stay like that forever. There was a weaver who thought, “I want to make the king happy by giving him a present.” He thought he would give the king a present for the king’s birthday. For three months he made it, using gold and silver and gems. He made a very beautiful cloth which no one else in the world could make. On the king’s birthday everybody brought presents including the weaver. The king looked at this, and said, “It is very beautiful.” He praised the weaver, accepted it, gave it to the minister, and asked him to get a good coat made of that cloth. Later on, the weaver was walking down the road. He came to the tailor’s shop and saw his cloth all cut up, all cut into little pieces. The tailor had cut it and placed it on the table. The tiny, tiny pieces were on the ground. He looked at it and said, “No one else in the world could have made any cloth like it. This is the cloth I made!” He went into the shop and asked, “How did this happen? How did you get this?” “The king gave it to me to sew,” said the tailor. But the weaver could only see that it was cut into pieces. He cursed at the tailor and yelled, “I experience so much difficulty making the cloth, and you simply cut it into pieces. You just cut it! I’m going to tell the king.” He said this, hit the tailor, pushed him to the ground, and ran to the king where he fell down, screamed and howled, “Maharaja, I made this cloth with so much difficulty. The cloth was so beautiful, and that tailor cut it into little pieces.” “Aha?” “He cut it into little pieces and ripped it all up. Is that right to do? I experienced so much difficulty making it.” “Just calm down. What do you want me to do about this?” “I have to defecate in the middle of the tailor’s house! I have to defecate right in the center of that brainless idiot’s house.” “All right. Just calm down, you can defecate in the center of his house. But when you are finished, do you think everything will be all right? “After I defecate, I’ll be fine. Then I’ll be peaceful.” The king called the tailor and said to him, “Let the weaver defecate in the center of your house, don’t do anything to stop him.” Then the weaver went and emptied his bowels in the tailor’s house. The tailor somehow or other got the mess cleaned up. “Now I’m peaceful,” the weaver said. After that, the tailor sewed up the coat, and when it was finished, the king wore it. Then he invited everyone to a party and wore the garment. When the weaver saw it he said, “It isn’t like it was before. It looks really beautiful on the king! I gave that cloth to him.” “How does it look now?” asked the king. “It’s very good now,” said the weaver. Compare the peace you experienced when you defecated with the peace you are experiencing now,” said the king. “Now the material is very beautiful! I’m going to ask the tailor’s forgiveness. Will the tailor make me one?” Everything that the mind possesses is like that. You can give all of the things that you have made with your minds to God, as a present. All kinds of forms, magics and miracles, this and that, learning and psychology, all these you are making and trying to give them to God. If you get a good father, he will cut all that into pieces like the tailor cut the material. He will cut everything into pieces. He will keep the good pieces and sew them into a good garment. He will make it into a good form and give it to God as a present. He will cut all the parts you give him, then he will put them together as a present to God. All the parts you bring do have to be cut. They have to be cut into pieces. As he is cutting, you might complain, “Aiyo, I made this, I made it like that, I did miracles, I did spiritual things, I did magic, and I brought them all here. And you have cut them all to pieces!” “He cut it up like that? What to do?” one might ask. And maybe you will answer, “I want to go into the middle of his house and defecate there!” So after you empty your bowels, you may leave, but still the feces will have to be thrown out. Those things have to be cut. They have to be given to the Father in the correct way. Then there is peace. After that, you can be peaceful. Then everything will be open to you. Everything will be cut, and the unneeded pieces discarded. Then everything will be open. Q: Can I do it myself, or do I have to work with someone else? Bawa Muhaiyaddeen: It is not work you can do. You have broken everything. All the thread has been used up, you have used all the colors of thread. Because you have used all the points without discrimination, you cannot cut. The tailor is needed. Q: Sometimes you are overwhelmed by the knowledge that all is God, and you are flooded with that. Then later the darkness and the cold regions flood you also, how do you deal with that? Bawa Muhaiyaddeen: When this house was being built, it was dark. When the house was completed it was even darker. When we put the lights on, then the darkness went away. We turned the lights on, to dispel the darkness. The two are opposites, maya is opposite to God. The two are opposite, night and light. Therefore, the two will come. You need Wisdom. If you focus a mirror on a very bright light, the light is reflected. It is like that. If you correctly hold the mirror of Wisdom, the darkness will run away very fast. Darkness, demons, ghosts, satan, and things like that are afraid of light. They are very afraid of light. If you hold a light up to them, they will be so afraid they will not come near you. They will only come if you have darkness, since darkness is their life. Therefore, turn on the light of Wisdom. They will come, but they will go back. They will not catch hold of you; they will not come near you; they will not come within the boundaries of light. The darkness will stay out of the circle of light. The darkness will draw back. Do not worry. Q: It’s like when the lights go out and you can’t find the switch. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen: It is easy if you keep the switch close by. Do not keep it far away. Do not search for it “out there”, search for it here in the heart. Do not fumble around for it, just place the switch here, and directly put your hand on it here, on the heart. Place the switch here, in the heart. Copyright: “God’s Light”, Vol. 1, No. 7 Bawa Muhaiyaddeen Fellowship Family Newsletter January 2004
