STUDENT: I was very worried about something for a while. Then, just as I was falling asleep, I felt something pop inside me. It was very strange. But then the worrying of my mind was eased, and I slept well and felt better. I was just wondering what that was. BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: Since it popped, you have had a little peace. But after two days go by, it will say "Toop!" and come back again. Then you have a headache and depression and all sorts of things. Think about this. You must play back all the reels of your life and analyze the right and the wrong that you see there. If you analyze it properly, if you see what was wrong in your life and then find out why it went wrong at that time, then you will say, "O my God! Everything I did was wrong. I didn't go on the right path earlier, and I still haven't found it. All this time, all these years, I have been on the wrong path. This is no good for me. I must throw away all those wrong things and follow only what is right." If you do that, then the pop and the toop will both disappear from your life, and you will learn the wisdom you need to proceed on the right path. Search for that path with certitude; seek what is right for you. In the East we don't raise cats inside the house, so what does a cat do to survive there? It sneaks into the kitchen and steals food, then it runs over to the kitchen fireplace to defecate, and afterwards it scratches among the ashes to hide its feces. Sometimes there are still some glowing embers, so the cat gets burned and runs away howling. But after a little while it comes back to dig in the same place and gets burned again and runs again. Of course, if there are no more glowing embers, the cat can do its job, cover it up, and go away unhurt. But no matter how often it gets burned, it will keep returning to the same place, because it hasn't the awareness or the intellect to learn from its past experience. Your cat mind is just like that. You have not learned from the suffering you have undergone in your life. You have not even thought about it. Many different reels and stories have gone by in your life, yet you still are not reflecting upon them. Just as the cat returns to the glowing embers, you are returning again and again to the same state, digging and digging in the same place. When you dig among the glowing embers, they burn you, and you run away. But then you come back again to that very spot. Discard this cat intellect which is born of ignorance and lacks awareness. Understand yourself through wisdom. If you can do that, then all this fatigue and sorrow and suffering will not affect you. STUDENT: Every time I look for any happiness in my life, I get hurt. So is it wrong to expect happiness? BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN: You must search for happiness, but not in the way the cat does. It eats meat and drinks milk in the kitchen and immediately wants to defecate in the same place. If it went outside and dug in the sand, that would be much easier. But the cat is impatient and lazy. It likes to take a short cut, and that is the cause for its trouble. Joy for the cat is to return to the same fireplace. You also want to find your joy in the same place. You want to find it fast, you want instant happiness. That is dangerous. Understand first. Analyze and see. Or else just remain quiet. The greatest joy is to be still. Muhaiyaddeen, M.R. Bawa.
