There's a mechanism in the body that tells you when you're hungry. It's not an alarm clock. It's more like a habit. You just know it. There's an instrument within you that knows what time you're accustomed to eating and makes you aware of it, because you've formed a habit. You also have a sleeping pattern. When it's your customary time for sleeping, you automatically feel tired, and when it's your customary waking time, you wake up. These are habits you have formed. If you're used to having tea at a set time, you will want it at that time every day. The cells and energies in your body are trained to automatically alert you at the appointed time for each of the habits you've formed. Something makes you aware of the need, and then you do it. Does an alarm clock go off inside? Does anyone say, "Do this right now!" No, these habits were forming in the body as far back as when you were just an embryo. And now, all the parts of the body—the blood, the breath, the air, the fire, the water, the flesh, and the bones—go to work and do what they've been trained to do. Now, there is a time difference of over ten hours between Sri Lanka and America, so when it's daytime here in Sri Lanka, it's night in America. There they'll be sleeping, and here we'll be awake. Nevertheless, if someone has just arrived here from America, he'll want to sleep, even though it's daytime, because that's the time he slept when he was there. His body will want to keep to its schedule, whether he is here or half way around the world. Until he gets used to the change of routine, he'll fall asleep at the usual time. In this way, every part of the body has been trained from the beginning to do certain things at certain times. These things were taught from day one. Prayer also was established from the very beginning to play its part in the body, just as the breath we programmed to go in and out. Prayer is within us, ingrained in a tiny piece of flesh,(1) but we have forgotten it. Truth is also there in that tiny piece of flesh. Wisdom and God and the remembrance of God are there too. But we forgot to establish them as a habit. Awareness and perception also exist there, inherent in that tiny piece of flesh. But because we did not train these things from the start, the habit has been forgotten, and they are lying dormant. If we had continued that training, we would be in constant remembrance of the existence of God, and by now we would have known God and heaven. If we had conscientiously trained what was placed there in the very beginning, if we had done this just as we trained the other aspects of our body, by now we would know the light of wisdom, and we would know that the soul and heaven and God all exist and would experience them in our wisdom, in our remembrance, and in our awareness. Because our parents and others did not establish these habits, we've forgotten them. We've remembered only the needs of the body. So, to teach us anew and make us remember what we've forgotten, God sent us His prophets, saints, wise men, and lights. They came to help us re-train the body to remember what we've forgotten, just as it reminds us of hunger and other functions. Once we've completed this training, we will experience the presence of God. But first these instruments within our body need to be re-awakened and trained to remember the feeling and awareness and clarity that are there. They need to be trained to remember God's qualities of love, justice, and integrity, to remember what good conduct is, to recognize right from wrong, and to remember that wondrous light of God, the beauty of His heaven, and the justice of His judgment. We all need help in awakening the memory of these things that lie forgotten. It's only because we weren't taught about these from the time we were young that this precious section is asleep. Think about this and re-learn what has been forgotten. When this is awakened from within, in that small piece of flesh, we will once again be made aware of the presence of God, as surely as our bodies make us aware of our hunger, our illnesses, our need for sleep, and our feelings about things like women, money, sex, and our possessions. We have no difficulty in being aware of all these, because we've formed habits of thought about them. So, if we train our bodies in the remembrance of God, we'll be aware of that too. It is God's house. He placed the light, wisdom, and everything else within it. It is indestructible. It also exists in animals. All the good and bad we do is within that point. Going there and worshipping there is the only true prayer. (From the book To Die Before Death: The Sufi Way of Life, by M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen.)
